Spoon-Saving Strategies: Navigating the Holiday Hustle with Chronic Illnesses

Ah, the holiday season – a time of joy, festivities, and the occasional stress-induced meltdown. I've never been a huge fan of Christmas, even before chronic pain took over my life. While everyone else is busy decking the halls, drinking too much Baileys (because it's Christmas after all!), or fighting Susan for the last Turkey Crown in Tesco, those of us with chronic illnesses know that the season comes with its own set of challenges and can be a serious drain on our metaphorical spoons.

Normally, I like to get dressed up over the holidays but last year, I was bloated, exhausted, in fluctuating amounts of pain. So out of the window went the high heeled boots and glittery jumpsuit and in came the fluffy teddy bear onesie and cuddles with my dog, Jess. And it was the best decision I made. Whilst suffering with chronic pain, I had found some level of comfort.

Everyone will have their own ways to manage their health over the holidays, because everyone's needs are entirely different. Here's my list of tips and tricks that have helped me over the years, and could help you navigate the holiday hustle without compromising your health and sanity. Because at the end of the day, your health is the number one priority.

  1. 1. Prioritise Your Must-Do's

  2. Make a list of your non-negotiable activities for the season. Whether it's a family dinner or a close friend's gathering, focus on what truly matters to you. You only have so many hours (and spoons) in a day, so be kind and considerate with your time. Sometimes you just can't do everything and you need to compromise. So think about what you want to get out of the holiday season, and prioritise spending your time doing things that truly matter. This leads me into my next point.

  3. 2. Embrace the Power of "No"

  4. It's not the easiest word to say, but it's a lifesaver. Learn to say "no" to invitations or activities that don't align with your energy levels or priorities. Putting yourself first often doesn't come very naturally, especially to those of us who put on a brave face every day for the sake of other people's comfort. But once you have mastered the art of saying no to things you can't or don't want to do, you'll find it easier to protect your time, wellbeing, and energy.

  5. 3. Strategise Your Socialising

  6. It sounds like a military operation almost, but planning the frequency and type of social activities you are taking part in can really do wonders. I always try to spread out social events to avoid overwhelming myself, and also spread out plans that involve alcohol or any forms of exercise so that my body has time to recover. Set aside time for self-care amidst the holiday chaos. Whether it's a warm bath, a good book, or your favourite TV show, make sure to leave time for the activities that bring you joy and relaxation. I've found it really important to plan in downtime between socials to recharge and ensure I'm not running on empty.

  7. 4. Opt for Online Shopping

  8. A basic one, but one I've grown to really appreciate. Skip the exhausting trips to crowded shops were you're getting elbowed about, and you become hot and stressed. You can now buy most things, including products from small businesses, online. So, embrace the wonders of online shopping to save both time and energy. Your spoons will thank you.

  9. 5. Delegate Like a Holiday Hero

  10. You don't have to be the superhero of the season. Delegate tasks like decorating, cooking, or gift-wrapping to friends and family who are more than willing to help. You don't have to struggle through everything alone. It's okay to ask for help!

  11. 6. Create a Spoon-Friendly Menu

  12. If you're hosting a holiday meal, keep it simple. Choose recipes that are easy to prepare or can be made in advance, saving you from the stress of last-minute cooking. Alternatively, make it a Pot Luck and get everyone to bring their favourite dish. Not only does it save you the excess energy and stress, but it's fun for everyone to get involved!

  13. 7. Build in Rest Breaks

  14. It's okay to need a minute! Schedule intentional breaks during gatherings or events. Find a quiet corner to relax and recharge when needed. Or get some fresh air outside. Your friends and family will understand.

  15. 8. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

  16. With fizz on tap, it's really easy to forget the basic: water! Keep a water bottle handy at all times. Staying hydrated is a simple yet effective way to maintain your energy levels. I also sometimes carry around a spare Peppermint teabag which can help alleviate any pain I experience with my own conditions.

  17. 9. Reflect and Adjust

  18. Chronic illness is unpredictable. You might have flare ups or your energy levels might take an unexpected dip. That's okay! Take moments to reflect on your energy levels and adjust your plans accordingly. Flexibility is key to navigating the unpredictable nature of chronic illnesses. The people that matter will understand and be flexible by your side.

  19. 10. Laugh Loudly and Unapologetically

  20. Laughter is the best medicine, they say. Surround yourself with people who bring joy into your life, and don't be afraid to share a good laugh – it's the ultimate stress-buster. The biggest comfort for me, is being around people I can be unapologetically myself, chronic illness and all. People that understand what you go through and what you need are often the biggest support and comfort during what can be quite a stressful period.

Remember, the holidays are about enjoying the moments that matter most, but your well-being always comes first. By adopting these spoon-saving strategies, you can have fun during the season while preserving your energy and mental wellbeing. Here's to a festive and spoon-friendly holiday season! 🥄🎄✨
